Emperor Otto the Great and Otto von Guericke left their mark on Magdeburg and are the namesakes of the City of Otto. Nowadays, the 1200-year-old metropolis by the river Elbe, which has been destroyed and rebuilt several times throughout its history, is not only characterised by impressive historic medieval buildings, quaint Baroque façades and monumental districts from the “Gründerzeit” period, but also by its modern architecture.

Magdeburg is also a good location to visit romantic villages and landscapes in or close to the Harz mountains with its three Unesco World Heritag Sites. Going up to the Brocken, the highest peak in the northern part of Germany with a steam train, is a great experience in every season. Further destinations in close vicinity are, e.g. Potsdam with its historical sites and of course the German Capital Berlin.
Magdeburg can easily be reached in less than 90 Minutes by car from airports in Hannover (HAJ), Leipzig/Halle (LEJ) and Berlin (BER). In all airports you find of course rental car agencies and special shuttle services are also available.
For train connections see German Railways "Die Bahn".

The hosting University is named after Otto von Guericke (1602 - 1686), the renowned son of Magdeburg and well-known for his research on the vacuum. The Otto von Guericke University (OVGU) was founded in 1993 and is thus one of the youngest universities in Germany. A place where tradition meets innovation.
It has a distinctive profile that aims to create a lean and sharply-defined structure with its main focus of expertise in the traditional areas of engineering, the natural sciences and medicine. It also views economics and management and the social sciences and humanities as essential disciplines for a modern university in the information age. With nine faculties, the university has gained in importance as a notable institution of teaching and research.
About 14,000 students are enrolled at the moment. Approx. 25% of them are international students. From the roughly 770 doctoral students are 285 students from abroad, who primarily work and do research in the fields of engineering (Process and Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering) and natural sciences.
